Bio: Dr. Christine Coughlin (she/her) is the Principal Investigator of the FLAME Lab and an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Illinois Chicago. She received a B.S. in Psychobiology from the University of California Los Angeles and a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of California Davis, where she worked with Dr. Simona Ghetti. She then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Psychology Department at the University of Texas at Austin, where she worked with Dr. Alison Preston. Her research program has been supported by funding from The National Institutes of Health. In addition to science, Dr. Coughlin loves dogs (all), Mexican food (burritos!), outdoor adventures, and reading fantasy novels.
Research Interests: Dr. Coughlin’s research examines the development of future event imagination, episodic memory, and learning. She uses behavioral and neuroimaging methods to identify the neurocognitive mechanisms that support typical improvements in these abilities with age. She is also interested in how different environments influence this development, as well as in how future event imagination may impact academic achievement and psychological resilience during development.

Education: B.A., Psychology, Temple University
Bio: Kate earned her B.A. at Temple University with a major in psychology and a minor in cognitive neuroscience. During her time at Temple, she worked on an honors thesis with Dr. Peter Marshall in the Developmental Science Lab on finger independence using EEG. After graduation, Kate stayed at Temple to work with Drs. Nora Newcombe and Ingrid Olson in the Kid Memory Lab studying the development of episodic memory in kids ages 4-9 through behavior and structural MRI.
Research Interests: Kate is passionate about exploring the development of neural mechanisms underpinning episodic memory development across the lifespan. Additionally, she is intrigued by the impact and outcomes of creativity on the salience of memories over time. Kate is also dedicated to community outreach, with a strong focus on promoting inclusion among minority groups in research.

Education: B.S., Psychology, University of Würzburg, Germany
M.S., Psychology, University of Zurich, Switzerland
Bio: Berit T. Barthelmes earned her B.S. degree in psychology from the University of Würzburg in Germany. Her Bachelor’s thesis comprised a cognitive psychological experiment in the area of empirical aesthetics measuring how art experts and laypeople differ in their mental processing of art. She earned her M.S. degree in psychology from the University of Zurich in Switzerland. There, she continued her journey in cognitive psychology and focused on memory research. This culminated in a metascientific Master’s thesis which involved the attempt to measure theoretical progress on the basis of scientific text taking the memory decay theory and its development over time as example. She is a PhD student in the Brain & Cognitive Sciences area at UIC.
Research Interests: Berit is passionate about memory research. She enjoys thinking about why and how individuals in different social and cultural contexts forget certain things rather than others. How memories are incorporated to form a concept of the future intrigues her. She’s greatly enthusiastic about metascientific approaches to improve psychological science.

Bio: Sinem Camlica earned her B.A. degree in psychology from Texas Tech University with a minor in Family Life Studies. During her undergraduate journey, Sinem was a lab manager for the PRYDe Lab where she had the opportunity to conduct and present her own research related to Justice Involved Youth; specifically focusing on risk factors for recidivism, the role of executive function as well as the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and trauma in this specific population. Continuing her journey in cognitive psychology, Sinem began working in the FLAME Lab as a lab manager to further her research interests and gain experience in the field of memory.
Research Interests: Sinem is passionate about the intersections of research and intervention, with the goal of training as a mental health counselor while maintaining the perspective of a psychology researcher. She enjoys exploring how individual factors influence development across the lifespan.
